My Dog Shows

You need to find a club or trainer who is experienced in training agility dogs - and people! (see our clubs list)
You will need to know what shows are in your area and what classes you can enter. (see Dogification: Agility activity) for schedules and classes to enter.
You will need to know how to keep your dog fit and healthy and injury free
You will need to have the right collar for competing – please see the KC website or your club
You will need clothes you can run and comfy shoes – it can be a long day
Small and medium sized dogs will need to be measured officially if you plan on going to Kennel Club Licensed shows.
Most shows will send you your ‘running orders’ before the show so you can plan when you need to be at each ring

Arrive in plenty of time!
Find the ring your class will be in and check in with the official
It’s a good idea to bring food and water for yourself and your dog – and a tasty treat or toy for a reward
Make sure you pick up after your dog
When you are not competing, please offer to help with pole picking or any other jobs that need doing – these shows are run by volunteers

You need to find a mentor. Usually the breeder of your pup – they will help you get on the showing ladder
You will need to find a ringcraft to help you train your pup and you! (See our Clubs list)
You will need to know what shows are in your area and what classes you can enter. (see Dogification: breed showing activity) for schedules and class definitions – remember to buy a catalogue!
You will need to know how to keep your dog fit and healthy
You will need to find someone in your area to help with coat management
You need to study the breed standard as set down by the Kennel Club
You will need to have the right lead for your breed
You will need smart clothes for showing and comfy shoes – it can be a long day
You will need a ringclip to hold your exhibitor number
You will need somewhere to keep your dog stuff when at a show

Arrive in plenty of time!
Collect your catalogue from the secretary’s desk, find your entry and your exhibitor number. Some shows will give you your number when you go into the ring for your class and others you will need to find your number which is usually on your bench
This number is how the judge and steward identify you – names are not permitted
Prepare your dog and keep an eye on the ring you will be in – make sure you follow the catalogue and don’t miss your class
It’s a good idea to bring food and water for yourself and your dog – and a tasty treat or toy for in the ring
Make sure you pick up after your dog

Do give other exhibitors space – don’t run faster than the dog in front – rather wait and then run, don’t stand with your dog too near the next dog, and pick up any bait you may drop
Listen to the judge and only give short answers if asked anything
If you are unsure about anything the ring steward will help
Follow the stewards directions if you are placed
If you are not placed, please remember to keep your opinions to yourself – don’t let sour grapes spoil another exhibitors day. Always congratulate the winner
